Northeast football coach steps down

By By Richard Dark/The Meridian Star
Darryl Jones, who has guided the Northeast Lauderdale football Trojans for the past two seasons, handed in his letter of resignation the week after his team concluded their 4-7 campaign.
Jones said the move was all his own, opting to veer his coaching career toward an assistantship.
Despite high expectations from many surrounding the Northeast Lauderdale football program, the Trojans dropped their final six games to finish with a 4-7 record. The four wins, however, represented more than NEL had garnered in a season in many years.
While he admits there may be those that think the poor finish may have played a part in the decision, Jones was quick to dispel those notions.
Jones' 2000 group was made up of a core group of youngsters, primarily sophomores, that he had coached at Northeast Middle School.
Jones admitted, however, that he would not rule out an assist position at another school.
