Meridian High School may only be a year away from participating in fast-pitch softball.
Meridian High Athletic Director Mac Barnes said he was going to make the recommendation to the school board to add the sport for the upcoming school year.
Barnes said the talks are in the very preliminary stages but he does want to add the sport. He added that he doesn't have a coach in mind yet but has had several calls about the job.
Barnes said the biggest reason for starting fast-pitch was the fact that the state junior college association has eliminated slow-pitch.

One of a kind
A Mississippi newspaperman has put together a must-have book for any high school football fan.
The book "MHSAA State Football Championships: The First Century," will be published Dec. 15.
The 252-page book is a year-by-year summary about the MHSAA state football championships from 1923 through the 2000 season. It is a collection of more than 200 black and white photographs of the teams that participated in the state championship games along with roster listings of the players, coaches and cheerleaders from each team. It also contains more than 100 stories about the championship games itself.
The book is filled with statistical information such as who played and the scores of the games, standings, playoff scores, and championship summaries along with a compilation of state championship game records and reported state records on Mississippi High School football.

5-4A All-Division team
As expected, Laurel dominated the Division 5-4A team. Buddy Duke was named 5-4A coach of the year and Troy Wolverton was named Most Valuable Offensive Back. Chris Triplett was named Most Valuable Offensive Lineman and Jermaine Ransom was named Most Valuable defensive back.
Locally, four Quitman High Panthers made the first team. They include seniors Willie Pickens, David Laphand and Will Evans along with junior Marcus Moore.
Northeast Lauderdale's Courtney Bourrage was also on the first team.
On the second team from Quitman was Darian Parks, Rod Brooks, Lavance McClendon and Cory Carpenter. From Northeast on the second team was Kelvin Horne, Marcus Betts and Tyrone Ivy.
Honorable mention from Quitman was Tommy Carroll, Paul Satcher and Courtney Harralson while Pascual Thedford and Dashawn Cole were honorable mention from Northeast.
