MCC honors 132 winter graduates

Winter graduation ceremonies Saturday at Meridian Community College's Ivy Hall Theatre included 132 students, said Dr. Tommy McDonald, vice president for student services.
Debra A. Jordan Brewer, a nurse manager at Riley Hospital, was the keynote speaker.
Five outstanding students were tapped during the ceremony for inclusion in MCC's Circle of Excellence based on their scholarship, leadership, spirit and service: Beverly Langston, Latrecia DeAnn Lewis, Catherine McNulty, Kerstin Miessner and Tina Grimes. They received medallions and certificates.
Langston, 32, of Meridian, is an Associate Degree Nursing Program student. A former school teacher, Langston is a member of the Organization of Student Nurses. She is a single parent who works part-time.
Lewis, 19, of Collinsville, is a university transfer student studying biology and pre-medicine. She placed third in the Health Occupation Students of America competition. Holding down two part-time jobs, Lewis is also a campus tutor.
McNulty, 51, of Stonewall, is an Associate Degree Nursing Program student. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international scholastic honor fraternity for community and junior college students, McNulty holds a part-time position and enjoys raising her 9-year-old grandson.
Miessner, 22, a native of Austria, is a marketing student. Holding a perfect 4.0 grade point average, Miessner is a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Distributive Education Clubs of America and Ivy Leaguers student recruiting team. She earned a first place in the HOSA competition.
Grimes, 32, of Chunky, is a practical nursing student. She won a first place in the state HOSA contest and a sixth place in the national HOSA competition. This wife and mother of two sons works part-time.
Earlier in the day, during the Associate Degree Nursing Program Pinning Celebration, Amy Clark was recognized as the recipient of the Margaret Armstrong Excellence in Nursing Award. High scorers on a battery of tests taken in connection with the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses McNulty, Stephanie Blount and Kellie Warren were also recognized.
