National Weather Service officials in Jackson have issued a winter storm watch for several counties in East Mississippi, and said icy precipitation could begin falling as early as midnight.
The warning was issued for Kemper, Lauderdale, Neshoba, Newton and Winston counties.
Smith said as much a fourth of an inch of freezing rain could fall, and a little less than 2 inches of snow could accumulate. He said freezing rain and snow could fall in the early morning hours Thursday before the temperature begins to rise to between 35 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
Northeastern Mississippi will be take the largest hit from any freezing precipitation; East Mississippi will be on the fringes of the weather front.
Even though temperatures should begin rising Thursday, Smith said motorists should still exercise extreme caution.
