The Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors will consider whether to apply for a grant to renovate the South Harbor Shelter at a public hearing Jan. 4.
The shelter, at 2900 St. Paul Street, also houses the Multi-County Community Service Agency.
District 2 Supervisor Jimmie Smith visited the shelter last week.
The Small Cities Community Development Block Grant is funded by the Mississippi Development Authority. About $39 million is allocated statewide. Lauderdale County could receive up to $450,000, but supervisors are not sure how much money they will request.
Supervisors plan to have an architect or engineer inspect the property and submit a list of what needs to be done and how much it will cost.
Grant guidelines require the funds be used to benefit low and moderate income people, help prevent or eliminate slums or help improve conditions posing a serious and immediate threat to community health and welfare.
Smith said East Central Planning and Development District officials think Lauderdale County has a good chance of getting a grant for South Harbor.
The meeting is scheduled for Jan. 4, at 3 p.m., in the Raymond P. Davis County Annex Building boardroom.
