Applications are being accepted through Jan. 5 at the United Way of Lauderdale for portions of a $51,484 grant provided by the Emergency Food &Shelter National Board Program.
Nonprofit organizations in Lauderdale County wishing to apply for the assistance do not have to hold membership in the United Way of Lauderdale County, but must comply with terms set forth by the National Board chaired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The board consists of representatives from the Salvation Army, American Red Cross, United Jewish Communities, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA and United Way of American.
The United Way of America provides the administrative staff and functions as fiscal agent for the program.
The board was created to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of emergency food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.
The local board will determine how the funds awarded to Lauderdale County will be distributed among local agencies that operate emergency food and shelter programs.
Under terms of the grant, local governmental or private voluntary organizations chosen to receive funds must be non profit, have an accounting system and conduct an annual audit, practice nondiscrimination and have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs. If they are a private voluntary organization, they must also have a volunteer Board of Directors.
Applications must be submitted in letter to The United Way of Lauderdale County, P.O. Box 5376, Meridian, MS 39302.
Agencies should identify their specific emergency food or shelter programs and provide general statistics regarding past emergency food and shelter assistance.
