National Weather Service officials in Jackson have issued a special weather statement to help prepare people for the cold and possibly snowy New Year's weekend predicted for East Mississippi.
Woods said today will be sunny but cold, with the high in the upper 30s. Like last night, north winds at 10 miles per hour are expected to produce early morning wind chills in the lower teens.
Saturday night will be clear and cold with a low around 15 degrees.
Sunday is expected to be cloudy with the high in the mid-30s.
Cloud coverage will continue into the night, with a 20 percent chance of snow showers in the area, and Woods predicted the low to be between 15 and 20 degrees. The chance of snow showers will carry on into New Year's Day with a high near 30.
She said it is also too early to tell what road conditions may be like and urges people to listen to NOAA Weather Radio provided as a public service by the Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or check local media weather forecasts to keep themselves updated.
