DECATUR The Coyte Vance Farewell Tour is likely to have many happy stops this winter.
It's unlikely than many will be more special than Saturday night's championship game of the MPSA Central Mississippi Classic at East Central Community College as Vance's University Christian School Flames torched Jackson Prep 61-49.
Vance, a native of nearby Conehatta, was presented the top trophy by his team in the locker room following the Academy A Flames win over AAAA Prep.
The Flames led 11-5 after one quarter and took a 31-21 lead into halftime behind 11 points from Ryan Eaton and eight from tournament MVP Reggie Carter.
A basket from Carter put the Flames up 37-22 with 5:36 left in the third quarter.
Prep's woes worsened when 6-foot-9 sophomore David Long picked up his fourth foul with 2:42 to go in the third period. Carter made both free throws to give UCS a 41-25 lead.
Prep rallied to within 45-33 by the end of the third period but the Flames prevented any major comeback.
Eaton led fifth-ranked UCS with 17 points. Carter scored 15, Tripp Cain had 13, and Matt Thornton had seven.
Walker Tann led fourth-ranked Prep, 12-7, with 15. Long and Matthew Wiggins both scored nine and Jimbo Moss added six.
Leake boys 51, Indianola 46: The Rebels outscored Indianola in every quarter but the second in taking the third-place game.
Leake led 12-9 after one quarter and held a 28-27 halftime advantage behind 14 points from Drew Wolverton and 10 from Luke Culpepper.
The Rebels carried a 42-38 lead into the final period.
Wolverton led Leake, 15-4, with 19 points. Culpepper added 11, while Jacob Mansell and Justin Wilkerson both had nine.
Indianola, 8-15, was led by Henry Gantz' 22 points, 17 of which came in the first half. Ryan Roberson added seven.
Winston boys 57, Kemper 47: Freshman Phillip Harrison scored 22 points to lead the Patriots to the fifth-place game win.
Winston led 15-11 after one quarter and took a four-point lead (27-23) into halftime behind 10 second period points from Harrison. The Patriots upped their advantage to 44-36 by the end of the third period.
Winston evened its record at 8-8 after going 3-1 in the tournament.
The Patriots got off to a slow hoops start as many of the players had key roles on Winston's AA state championship football squad.
The Patriots also got 12 points from Blake Fulton, eight from Caleb Metts, seven from Jonathon Stevens, and six from Taylor McNeel.
Kemper, 12-3, got 13 points apiece from Wade Whitaker and John Alan Darnell and 10 each from Justin Robertson and Ty Harbour.
