Newton County's Lady Cougars remained undefeated in Division 5-3A with a 60-44 road victory at Carthage Tuesday night in area high school basketball action.
Coach Richard Harris' Lady Cougars are now 23-2 overall and 3-0 in division play, and will host Choctaw Central Friday in a battle for first place in the division.
Newton County's girls were tied with Carthage after one period of play and led just 28-22 at halftime. But the Lady Cougars opened the second half with an 18-6 run to take control.
Tamekia Foley led Newton County with 17 points, while Lakelia Bogan had 14, Yolanda Johnson 10 and Kristen Chaney eight.
Philadelphia boys 57, Williams-Sullivan 47: The Tornadoes took the Division 5-2A victory at home behind 18 points from Keith Houston.
Philadelphia, which is now 15-11 overall, also got 13 points from Tellas Burnside and 12 from Rashawn Hill.
Noxubee County girls 66, Louisville 39: The Tigerettes continued their red-hot play by pounding the visiting Lady Wildcats in Division 2-4A action.
Noxubee County, ranked No. 12 in the state, improved to 21-4 overall and 3-0 in division play behind Erlexis Cooper's 17 points. Shawnequa Rucker added 14 points and Chaffie Spann had 11, while Tiffany Murray had nine and Jessica Mason eight.
Louisville got 11 points from Shenita Ford and nine apiece from Nikki Yarbrough and Shaneaka Sistrunk.
Bay Springs boys 74, Morton 47: The Bulldogs got a game-high 25 points from Jason Forte' to take the Division 7-2A victory over Morton.
Claude Pruitt added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who are now 12-12 on the year.
Morton (15-11) got 17 points from Elijah McDonald.
Morton girls 60, Bay Springs 52: The Lady Bulldogs weren't as fortunate, as the Bay Springs girls fell to highly-touted Morton.
The 16-9 Lady Bulldogs lost despite a game-high 31 points from Christy Martin and 11 more from Karen Clayton.
Morton, which is now 18-8, got 19 points from Teresa Ealy and 16 from Tyeasha Denson.
Taylorsville boys 48, Enterprise 35: The Bulldogs couldn't find the offense Tuesday night and dropped a Division 7-2A game at Taylorsville.
Enterprise got 11 points from Cory Boggan, seven from Don Moore and six from Mitchell Burns.
Taylorsville, which is 13-8, got a game-high 25 points from Timothy Broomfield.
Taylorsville girls 53, Enterprise 27: The Lady Bulldogs also fell in division action, as Enterprise was nearly doubled up by host Taylorsville.
The Lady Tartars, who are 15-7, got 19 points from Amanda McGill.
Shonda Bester led Enterprise with seven points.
Leake Academy boys 49, Canton Academy 43: Drew Wolverton pumped in 16 points as the Rebels downed the Panthers in Academy 3-AA action.
Joshua Chamblee chipped in 14 points and Derek Freeny had seven for Leake, which improved to 23-6.
Canton was led by Woody Stringer and John Paul Buckley, who each had 12 points for the 17-5 Panthers.
Leake Academy girls 59, Canton Academy 51: The Rebelettes also picked up an important division win by knocking off the Lady Panthers.
Leake, which improved to 27-5, got 17 points from Sue Chennault. Freshman Kristin Caldwell scored 15 and Marissa Henry 13, while B.J. Helton chipped in six.
Canton, which fell to 21-5, was led by Mary Virginia Morgan, who scored 18.
Forest girls 56, Prentiss 35: The Lady Bearcats used a balanced scoring attack to knock off Prentiss in Division 7-3A action.
Patsy McKee scored 13 points for Forest, which is now 17-7 on the season. Latrice Spivey added 12, Sophia Gray had seven and Kelly Boutwell had six.
Oak Hill Academy 68, Winston Academy girls 38: The Lady Patriots fell to Class AAA Oak Hill despite 13 points from Katy Rose White.
Shasta Nance threw in 10 points for Winston.
Oak Hill moved to 12-13, as the Lady Raiders had six players with at least eight points in the contest.
Pisgah boys 81, Scott Central 48: The Rebels' woes continued with a blowout loss to Pisgah, as Scott Central lost despite 12 points from Cedric Gray.
Pisgah improved to 9-6 behind 20 points from Alphonso Lee.
