Lady Knights take 20-point win at Velma Jackson

The West Lauderdale girls picked up a big Division 5-3A victory on the road Friday night as they topped Velma Jackson 58-38 in prep basketball action.
West Lauderdale, now 19-8 overall and 2-2 in division play, hosts Newton County next Friday and Kemper County on the following Tuesday. The division tournament will be played at Southeast Lauderdale.
Julie McCrory scored 17 points to pace the Lady Knights, while Shannon Lloyd added 14, J.J. Huggins scored 11 and Kristina Gardner 10. Catunia Ledy paced Velma Jackson, 21-6 and 3-3, with 15 points.
West Lauderdale hit on 17-of-20 free throws.
After leading 11-8 at the end of the first quarter, West outscored Velma Jackson 17-13 in the second period to go up 28-21 at the half. The Lady Knights were not seriously challenged in the second half as they outpointed the home team 30-17 during the two periods.
Velma Jackson boys 76, West Lauderdale 64: Velma Jackson exploded for 27 points in the final period to pull away from the Knights.
Clark added that Velma Jackson shot 70 percent from the three-point range, and that made a difference.
Though West dropped to 13-15 overall, it was the Knights' first division loss of the season. Velma Jackson concluded its division play with a 5-1 record.
Calvin Moore's 32 points paced the Knights, while Boo Ramsey added 14. Hervie Banks scored 21 points to lead Velma Jackson.
West Lauderdale will be back in action Tuesday when both teams visit Clarkdale in a non-division game.
