One of Mississippi's most revered sports and leadership figures Archie Manning will be the featured speaker at the annual recognition program held by the Lauderdale County Boys and Girls Club.
The "Celebration of Excellence" honors Boys and Girls Club participants who have worked hard at achieving educational goals and high standards.
Manning, an athletic superstar and popular speaker on leadership, will speak March 22 at the program which is scheduled at the Frank Cochran Center.
His remarks are expected to highlight a program which will also recognize members and supporters of the club's activities. A number of awards will be presented, including Outstanding Community Involvement, Outstanding Members of the Club and Outstanding Volunteers.
The Lauderdale County Boys and Girls Club programs provide a variety of "life-enriching opportunities" for the youth of the community. Staff and volunteers help with academic skills, college preparation, career education, life skills, conflict resolution, etiquette and first aid classes.
Cobb said these programs are supplemented by athletic opportunities of all types.
The steak dinner served at the event will be provided by Outback Steakhouse with entertainment provided by Boys and Girls Club Choir.
In 1971, Manning was the second player chosen in the NFL draft and the number one draft choice of the New Orleans Saints. He set Saints passing records, played in two Pro Bowls and was named the NFL's Most Valuable Player in 1978. He was the first player in Saints history to be inducted into the Louisiana Superdome Wall of Fame. He ended a 15-year NFL career in 1985.
His pro career followed his high-successful years as quarterback of the Ole Miss Rebels.
