Miller crowned MCC homecoming queen
Special to The Star
Feb. 4, 2001
Meridian Community College sophomore Doella Miller received the homecoming queen crown Saturday as the climax of MCC's homecoming festivities.
Miller, a native of Batesville, was selected queen by the college's students and the surprise announcement was made during the presentation of the homecoming court during the halftime of the men's basketball game.
The daughter of Robert C. Miller Sr. and Betty L. Miller, Miller is studying biology and plans to become an obstetrician/gynecologist. A member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international scholastic honor society for community and junior colleges, Miller is a cheerleader and serves on MCC's recruiting team. She is a track team member who earned a fifth place finish in the 4 x 100 meter relay and a sixth place finish in the 4 x 400 meter relay.
She will earn her associate's degree in May and plans to transfer to the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Her escort during the presentation was Tee Thomas of Starkville.
Miller was one of 10 homecoming maids. Sophomore maids and their escorts were Leslie Box of Meridian and Ryan Simms of Slidell, La.; Keever Gartman of Enterprise and Tyler Scarbrough of Meridian; La'Quanda Moffett of Laurel and Derrick Jenkins of Meridian; and Kiwanis Pearson of Stonewall and Damani Ralph of Jamaica.
Freshmen maids and their escorts were Rhonda Dyan Baylor of Meridian and Keith Wilkerson of Meridian; McKenna Gray of Meridian and Brook Farmer of Enterprise; Danielle Hornsby of Meridian and Victor Temple of Newton; Brandy Harris of Meridian and Trave Hopkins of Ripley; and Mitzy Stewart of Meridian and Ron Waggonner of Meridian.
Assisting with the crowning were Dr. Scott Elliott, MCC president; Dr. Tommy McDonald, MCC vice president for student services, Hannah Pickard, MCC's 2000 homecoming queen; Nathan Miller, crown bearer, and Breeanna Adams, flower bearer.
The crowning of the homecoming queen was just one of the activities held during the day's festivities. Starting off with a tea for the homecoming court, Homecoming 2001 included a baseball intra-squad scrimmage, an alumni reception, basketball games, EagleFest banquet and homecoming dance.
