Powell camp stresses friendship, fundamentals

Saturday was both a day of reunion among friends and a day for passing along knowledge of a game they love for the instructors at the seventh-annual Rush/Jay Powell Baseball Camp at West Lauderdale High School.
Powell, a legend during his career at West Lauderdale where he became Mississippi's all-time prep career hits leader in addition to his considerable pitching skills, was the star of the day, but former Knights Paul Phillips, Jamie Brown, and Jeremy Jackson were also on hand among the staff of instructors.
Powell said he was well-pleased with the turnout on a splendid early February day.
During a few breaks, Powell, who now pitches for the Houston Astros, had a chance to chat with friends and renew acquaintances. And memories of the days in red and black flowed back and forth.
Powell even got in a few cuts during the Knights' lunchtime practice session.
The proceeds from this year's camp will go to the United Way of Lauderdale County.
Powell, who lives with his wife Candace in Madison in the off-season, saves his time for this annual camp.
