Steve Swogetinsky, an award-winning journalist with 28 years of experience at Mississippi newspapers, has rejoined The Meridian Star as regional editor, it was announced today.
Editor Buddy Bynum said Swogetinsky would assume his new duties immediately. He will report and edit stories, and direct The Star's enhanced coverage of news from throughout its circulation area. He will also produce the newspaper's Sunday business page, write a weekly column and coordinate newsroom operations on weekends.
Swogetinsky's return is part of a continuing commitment to strengthen The Star's news gathering capabilities as east Mississippi and west Alabama's daily newspaper, Bynum said.
Swogetinsky returns to The Star after having worked as editor and publisher of The Clarke County Tribune, a weekly newspaper in Quitman. Under his guidance, The Tribune won a first place award from the Mississippi Press Association in the General Excellence category for small weeklies.
For Swogetinsky, 45, the new role will be his third stint at The Star. His previous roles included business editor, managing editor, city editor, sports editor, wire desk editor and assistant sports editor. He has also been managing editor of The Laurel Leader-Call and sports editor of The Vicksburg Evening Post.
Swogetinsky and his wife, Denise, have been married nearly 24 years. They have four children, Stephanie, 18, Steven, 17, Mary Lynn, 12, and Joy, 3.
