Council OKs price negotiations for sewer, water extension

City leaders will soon begin negotiations with a Jackson-based firm on design work for extensions of water and sewer service to the most recently annexed area of Meridian.
Early estimates indicate the Phase II work will cost more than $3 million.
At Tuesday's city council meeting, all five members voted to begin negotiations with Engineering Associates Inc. for a scope of work and fee schedule regarding the extensions to Phase II of the project.
Phase I of the project began in December and focused on connecting several residential areas along Highway 19 South to the city's water and sewer system. In addition the Phase I portion also called for the construction of a two million gallon water tank near Firetower Hill.
Meridian Chief Administrative Officer Ken Storms said Phase II of the project will connect several more residential areas and will extend service out to the site of the new industrial park.
Leaders are hopeful representatives with Engineering Associates can acquire federal funding to help offset the price for the expansion of service.
