Heidelberg boys roll to 7-3A crown

The Heidelberg boys took one step closer to a third straight trip to the Class 3A Boys State Tournament Friday night, claiming the Division 7-3A Tournament title with a convincing 109-79 win over Prentiss.
Heidelberg, now 23-8 on the season, led just 20-17 after one quarter. But the Oilers exploded for 35 points in the second quarter, and the rout was on.
The Oilers got 20 points from Michael Pierce and 17 from Fred Stephens, while Derrick Turner scored 16 points and William Dukes 14. Prentiss was led by Jeremy Jefferson, who scored 20. Al Jefferson added 18 and Antwan Pittman 14.
Heidelberg hosts a first-round, Class 3A state playoff contest Tuesday, when the Oilers entertain the Division 6-3A runnerup.
Forest girls 50, Heidelberg 44: The Lady Bearcats from Forest built a 26-23 lead in the first half and doubled it for the final margin in the 7-3A girls' championship contest.
Forest, the defending Class 3A runnerup, got 14 points from DeeDee Bryant and 10 apiece from Ebonee Leverette and Patsy McKee in the victory.
Heidelberg was led by Katina Fowler's 14 points, while Lakesha Hales scored 13.
The Lady Oilers will travel to the Division 6-3A champion Monday at 7 p.m. for a first-round, Class 3A state playoff game, while Forest hosts the 6-3A runnerup at the same time.
