Joseph Gluhman receives Best of Show in 2001 Bi-State

Joseph Gluhman, was selected the "Best of Show" award winner at Meridian Museum of Art's 28th Annual Bi-State Art Competition.
The announcement was made at the recent awards reception held at the museum.
With his award, Joseph Gluhman becomes only the second two-time Best in Show winner in the Bi-State's 28 year history. He also earned the award in 1991 for his Cibachrome II photograph, "Green Wall." The only other two-time winner is Ke Francis, who won the award in 1977 and 1983.
The Bi-State is an annual competition open to Mississippi and Alabama artists that recognizes and rewards the finest work being done by contemporary artists in the two states.
Commenting on the overall show Bobick said, "A juried exhibition reflects the tastes of the juror. This one reflects mine. I tried to select those works which, regardless of style, medium, or size had something to say. Each of us looking at an art work takes our own experiences to it. It is impossible not to do so."
Other winners in this year's competition included:
Purchase awards: "The Grand Mystagogue," a screenprint by S.L. Dickey of Columbus; and "Tool Boxes," a wood and graphite work by Ron
Koehler of Cleveland.
Achievement awards: An untitled clay and raku vessel by Daniel Saucier of Hickory; "Ritual Pool," an Ilfochrome photograph by Margaret Gluhman of Auburn; and "Presence/Absence Series #7," a clay, fiberglass, wood and glass work by Wanda Atkinson of Meridian.
Merit awards: "Victorian Garden," a mixed media piece by Xander Booker of Birmingham; "Inner Strength," a wood and steel sculpture by John Marshall of Meridian; and "Bourbonic Plague," an acrylic painting by Todd Eldridge of Meridian.
The oldest juried art competition in the region, the Bi-State is sponsored by the Meridian Arts Council, Meridian Coca-Cola, the Mississippi Arts Commission and Trustmark National Bank. The exhibit will remain at the museum through March 10.
Meridian Museum of Art is located at Seventh Street and 25th Avenue in downtown Meridian, and is open Tuesday through Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Admission is free.
