Partnership offers smoking cessation seminar
The Partnership for a Healthy Lauderdale County will present a "Thinking About Quitting" smoking session March 1 at 806 Highway 19 North, Suite 385. The support group class will begin at 6 p.m. Freedom From Smoking is an eight-session stop-smoking class which includes skills for stress management, weight control, assertive communication and exercise to help the ex-smoker succeed. Recruitment day for Head Start centers
Head Start centers in Lauderdale County will hold a special recruitment day on March 2 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pre-registration is in progress. Children must be 3 or 4 years old to participate in the program. To register, please bring a certified birth certificate, copy of 2000 income, immunization compliance form, medical insurance card, Medicaid card and Social Security card of parent/guardian.

Some Enchanted Evening' to be performed
The musical, "Some Enchanted Evening," will be performed March 2, at 7 p.m., at the auditorium of Carthage High School. The musical event will include music from Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. The music is from "Oklahoma," "Sound of Music" and "Cinderella."
The musical is sponsored by the Arts Development Committee of the Leake County Chamber of Commerce. Jeffrey Jones and Kinsey Goldman will direct the production. Tickets are $5 in advance for adults, and $3 for children under 12.
Agri-Center hosts horse sale
The Southern Miniature Horse Confederation will sponsor its first miniature horse sale in Meridian Saturday, March 3, at the Lauderdale County Agri-Center. An estimated 60 miniature horses will be sold auction-style. The sale will include Pintos, Appaloosas and Buckskin breeds from Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Schools to benefit from McRae's sale
McRae's Department store is inviting local schools and school organizations to participate in its annual School Benefit Sale. The event will take place March 3, from 6-10 a.m. The private morning event offers customers savings throughout the store and also gives schools the opportunity to raise funds through ticket sales.
Participants will sell tickets for $5 and 100 percent of the proceeds from the sales go to the schools. McRae's will provide schools with the tickets and advertise the sale in all of its stores. To sign up your school or get more information, contact McRae's Meridian (601) 484-7809.
Jaycees sponsor Junior Miss event
The Meridian Jaycees will sponsor a Junior Miss program March 3, at 6 p.m., in the Meridian High School auditorium. Junior Miss is a scholarship program designed to promote the well-rounded young lady. The girls are judged in areas of scholastic achievement, panel evaluation, talent, physical fitness, presence and composure. There are 16 contestants entered and two winners will be chosen one for the city of Meridian and one for Lauderdale County. Admission is $5.
Meridian Gospel Travelers to play
The Meridian Gospel Travelers will perform in concert at Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Lauderdale March 3-4. Participants include many groups, choirs, solo singers and ministers. There will be gifts given away and everyone is invited to attend the event.
The concert will start at 7:30 p.m. on March 3. There will be two shows on March 4, at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. For more information, call Alice Mosley (601) 482-5138.

AARP offers free tax advice
Senior citizens have access to free tax advice every Tuesday and Friday until April 15. AARP volunteers will be available every Tuesday, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Meridian-Lauderdale County Public Library. Volunteers will also be available every Friday, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Highway 19 North Trustmark National Bank.
