A Meridian man struck by a car in the early morning hours of Feb. 15 as he attempted to cross Highway 11 South on foot died early Tuesday evening.
Lauderdale County Coroner Marl Cobler said 34-year-old Richard McClelland was pronounced dead at 6 p.m. at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. McClelland died of massive head injuries, Cobler said.
Lt. Wade Johnson of the Meridian Police Department said McClelland had been on life support since the accident.
The accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 11 South and Fifth Street, when 21-year-old Travis Thompson of Chapel Road apparently struck McClelland. Thompson was southbound at the time of the accident while McClelland was westbound on foot, Johnson said.
Johnson said no charges have been filed in connection with the accident. The department's accident investigation team was dispatched, but no report has been returned yet, Johnson said.
