They say the world of arts in Meridian would be like a painting without a canvas were it not for Emma McCain.
Ford's commends are echoed by many patrons of the arts, such as Connie Royal, executive director of the Meridian Arts Council.
Born in Vicksburg, McCain is a graduate of the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. Afterwards, her patriotism called her to serve in the American Red Cross during World War II. When the war was over, she found herself in New York serving as president of the Savings Bank Women a position she held until 1972 when she decided on Meridian as a home.
Since then, Ford said the two have shared many memories involving the arts, including attending dozens of Broadway plays, performances at New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Throughout that time, Ford said McCain has received numerous awards for her own talent and her patriotism of the world of art.
Her most recent acknowledgement of her dedication to the arts includes Friday's naming of the Fine Arts Theatre of Meridian Community College the "Emma McCain Fine Arts Theatre" during a ceremony titled "Serenade to a Great Lady."
The move was a unanimous decision by the MCC Board of Trustees, said Ralph Young Jr., chairman and 16-year-member of the board.
McCain made dozens of financial contributions to the college, including two $100,000-plus gifts to the foundation and established the cultural arts endowment. The foundation also previously recognized her as "Philanthropist of the Year."
