What is Meridian Museum of Art's Artists Group?
On Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the museum's Artists Group will host an open house, designed to introduce new people to the group and to encourage them to join. Held at the museum, the event is open to everyone free of charge and will include food, drink and a special program, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The program will feature an introduction to the group, a preview of activities for the year, an exhibit of artwork by members and a chance to try your hand at sketching a floral still life (supplies will be provided).
A direct descendant of the historic Painters Group that helped found the museum, the Artists Group was formed in 1992 to give area artists a place where they could come together to share their work and ideas. Since then, the group has met monthly for painting sessions, art demonstrations, outdoor art expeditions and field trips to see exhibits at sites such as the Birmingham Museum of Art and the New Orleans Museum of Art. The group also exhibits its work in regular shows in the 1870 Room at Weidmann's Restaurant.
Kent says one of its great benefits is the chance to spend time with others who know the triumphs and tribulations of being an artist.
New member Barbara Wells says the group's willingness to experiment is one of the features that attracted her.
The group is open to artists of all experience levels.
Meridian Museum of Art is located at the corner of Seventh Street and 25th Avenue. The museum is open 1-5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday, and admission is free. For more information, 693-1501.
