JACKSON To come close to winning a title the way this year's version of the Meridian High Lady Wildcats did, it wouldn't surprise anyone as to the amount of despair team members carried with them into the locker room and onward.
Donald Shirley has brought a group of Lady Wildcats to the Mississippi Coliseum for seven consecutive years, but perhaps never has he been as close, save for 1995.
Kanecia Williams, one of the senior mainstays on this group, said the Lady Cats allowed the title to slip through their fingers.
Cantea Brown, who turned in one of the more valiant efforts, was also distraught about the team simply running out of steam.
MHS AD Mac Barnes echoed the communities' disappointment.
As for Shirley, he said probably the toughest part of it all was facing the girls afterward.
Shirley is saying goodbye to seniors Brown, Williams, Cassandra Harris, Chelse Alford, Erica Cross and Chandra Collier.
