The Kemper-Newton Regional Library System has purchased more than 1,000 children's books, using a $10,000 federal grant.
The grant was made possible through the Library Services and Technology Act and the Mississippi Library Commission.
The money was divided among five libraries: Union Public Library, Decatur Public Library, J. Elliot McMullan Library in Newton, DeKalb Public Library and Scooba Public Library.
Gough said the grant money was used to buy new children's and young people's books to replace aging materials and to "update the shelves." Staff members at each library were able to choose the specific titles they wanted.
Lynette Long, head librarian at DeKalb Public Library, said the new books helped increase her black history section.
The majority of the books were purchased for young children up to middle school level; a small number will also benefit high school students.
