Excellence in education

Kara Etheridge was chosen as "Student of the Week" at Southeast Lauderdale High School in the Excellence of Education Program. She was recognized as a senior who excels academically, is a positive role model for other students and is actively involved in community activities. Etheridge has the chance to become one of the ten finalists eligible for $1,000 in scholarships. She is the daughter of Larry and Virginia Etheridge.
Jill Hicks of Lamar High School has been named as one of more than 2,600 candidates in the year 2001 Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students. The candidates are selected for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment. The White House Commission will make final selection of the scholars in May.
Hicks is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John Hicks.
LIVINGSTON Bradley Addair Cook of Meridian has been awarded a Trustee Scholarship to attend the University of West Alabama.
The award is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and leadership potential.
Cook, a senior at Northeast High School, plans to enter UWA in the fall.
Northwest Junior High School recognized as Students of the Month for February: Jolanda Grady, Tiffany McCarty, Reena Desai, Christy Plummer and Kate Crawford.
JACKSON Meridian resident J. Daryl Brown received a bachelor of arts degree in art from Belhaven College during commencement ceremonies in December 2000. He graduated cum laude.
The following Oakland Heights Elementary students were recognized as Reading is Fundamental poster winners: Malia Pryor; first place; Danika Conner, second place; and Raphael Whitsett, third place.
