Lady Tigers drop a pair to Huntsville

LIVINGSTON, Ala. The University of West Alabama softball team returned to the UWA Complex to take on Gulf South Conference rival Alabama-Huntsville on Thursday. Behind good pitching and good hitting, the Chargers swept the Tigers 11-0 and 14-6.
In the first game, the Chargers threw their ace and got good results. Lane Davis went five complete innings, not allowing a hit or a run to cross the plate. Junior hurler Zayne Smith took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing nine hits, while racking up three strikeouts to move her season record to 5-4.
Lane Davis, who was 2-for-2 with a first-inning home run and four RBI, led the Chargers offensive onslaught. Shannon Sims was 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
In game two, the Tigers were out to avenge their earlier defeat. UWA jumped out to an early lead, but UAH prevailed in the end 14-6. Freshman Terra DaCorte posted a strong outing pitching 6.2 innings while striking out six opposing batters. Crystal Hodges led the Tiger hitters with a 3-for-4 performance, adding two RBI and two runs scored. Keli Jo Lenz added two hits and two runs to pace the West Alabama offensive attack.
Audrey Williams was 3-for-4 in game two to lead the Alabama-Huntsville attack. Shannon Sims pitched in with a 2-for-4 performance with six RBI and a three-run homer in the sixth inning, which proved to be the game winner. Katrina Fomich pitched 4 2/3 innings to pick up the win for UAH.
The Lady Tigers softball team will be returning to action on Monday to take on the Lady Railsplitters of Lincoln Memorial. The game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m., at UWA Softball Complex.
