They were as different as they could be, but the Lamar School baseball team found a way to pick up a pair of wins in the Lamar Spring Baseball Tournament over the weekend to earn the round-robin championship.
Lamar beat Leake 12-2 by the 10-run rule on Saturday to seal the title, after nipping Newton County Academy 7-6 in eight innings on Friday.
Lamar put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the first to take control of Saturday's game against Leake quickly.
Ryan Satcher started the rally with a single and stolen base, while Jeff Knight had a two-run double in the inning, Bobby Stone had an RBI single and Drew Moffett ripped a two-run single.
The Raiders (4-1), stretched that margin to 6-0 in the third when Knight singled, moved to second on a passed ball, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.
Lamar hit for five more in the fourth thanks to a run-scoring double by Satcher and RBI singles from Jared McKee and Moffett.
Leake trailed 11-0 in the top of the fifth, but had a two-out rally to score two runs thanks to singles from Trey Langston and Paul Busby to cut it to 11-2.
Knight led the Raiders with three hits in the game, while Satcher, McKee and Moffett had two each.
McKee (2-0) had a strong outing on the mound for Lamar, carrying a one-hit shutout into the fifth.
Lamar 7, NCA 6: Lamar's one-run win over Newton County Academy on Friday was a much different story.
The Raiders had to come from behind three times before finally winning the game in the bottom of the eighth on a bases-loaded single by Satcher that scored Moffett.
Chris Walker belted a two-run homer for Newton in the top of the first to give the Generals a 2-0 lead. The Raiders bounced back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by McKee.
NCA regained the lead in the second when Chase Nicholson singled, stole second and scored on a Lamar error. The Raiders scored three times in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-3.
Monroe Mayfield had an RBI single in the inning, while Knight and Satcher both walked with the bases loaded.
The Generals picked up a single run in the third thanks to an error and then hit for two more in the fifth on a two-run homer by Mayford Stamper to go up 6-5.
NCA tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Satcher was hit by a pitch and later scored on a Newton error.
Stamper and Chase Nicholson had two hits each for NCA in the game, while Jamie Fontan (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Raiders.
Satcher and Mayfield led Lamar with two hits each in the game.
The Raiders return to action Tuesday when they travel to Columbus to take on Heritage at 6 p.m.
NCA 18, Leake 7: Leake jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a grand-slam homer by Joel Wall in the first, but it wasn't enough as the Generals mashed the ball all over the ballpark.
Scottie Massey, Adam Godwin and Kyle Chaney all had homers for Newton County Academy.
Massey, Chris Walker, Godwin and David Burt had three hits each for the winners, while Wall had two hits for the Rebels.
