Services for Bruce G. Hughes will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Melvin Boles officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Bonita.
Mr. Hughes, 62, of Meridian, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Rush Foundation Hospital. He was a retired news director and journalist after 30 years of service. At age 16, he began work as an announcer for WCOC Radio Station for McLendon Broadcasting of Dallas, Texas. He attended the University of Mississippi an was former head of Texas State Network. He received many awards from the Associated Press, United Press International, the Texas Association of Broadcasters and the Dallas Press Club. In his career he negotiated with a sky-jacker and even took a swing at Muhammad Ali in a one-round charity event.
Survivors include his mother, Ruby Hughes of Meridian; a sister, Dolores Wood of Meridian; a nephew, Danny Wood of Meridian; a very special friend, Wilma Miller; three aunts, Mrs. Craig Sheely, Bernice Webb and Nora Dineson; two uncles, Bobby Robinson and Leland Hughes; and a number of cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles "Ed" Hughes Jr. and a brother, Charles E. Hughes III.
The family requests memorials be made to the American Heart Association.
Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers include Marshall E. Joyner, Herbert D. Joyner, Charles "Buddy" Webb, Ed Sheely, Jack Boyette and Stanley Lee.
GLENN LEACH
Construction laborer
UNION Services for Glenn Leach will be held today at 2 p.m. at Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Terry Goodman and Larry Joyner officiating. Burial will be in Erin Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Mr. Leach, 76, of Little Rock, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Rush Foundation Hospital in Meridian.
Survivors include a brother, Thomas Leach of Little Rock.
Visitation will continue until time for service at the funeral home.
MILDRED S. KEEN
Artist
Services for Mildred S. Keen will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dr. Raymond Leake and J. Terry Plummer officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mrs. Keen, 88, of Meridian, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. She was a longtime artist, whose hobbies included China painting and doll collecting. She was a fourth generation member of First Baptist Church, where she was a member of Love Sunday School Class. She was also a former president of Meridian Junior Auxiliary.
Survivors include three daughters, Mai Keen Sanders and her husband, Joe Charles, Sandra Keen Plummer and her husband, J. Terry, and Lou Keen O'Leary and her fianc, David Hamilton, all of Meridian; 10 grandchildren, Marcia S. West and her husband, Randy, Chuck Sanders and his wife, Janie, Leila Sanders, Sherry P. Armistead, Guy Plummer and his wife, Karen, Cindy Stygles and her husband, Nelson, Dr. Linda Cochran and her husband, Newt, Terry L. Plummer and his wife, Robin, Keen Martin and Holly Martin; 17 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Guy Keen; her parents, Leila Mai and Jim Stallworth; and a brother, Frank Stallworth.
The family requests memorials be made to First Baptist Church or a favorite charity.
Visitation will be today from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers include Guy Plummer, Terry L. Plummer, Chuck Sanders, Joseph Sanders, Jonathan Sanders, Aaron Armistead, Ron Sparnecht and Randy West.
HAYDEN CLARENCE POYNTER
Retired wholesale lumberman
Services for Hayden Clarence Poynter will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Barham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Raymond Leake officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
Mr. Poynter, 86, of Memphis, died Friday, March 23, 2001, at Primary Health Care in Memphis. He was a retired wholesale lumberman and a former resident of Meridian. He was a member of First Baptist Church, served on the Board of the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau, was former president of the Southern Pine Manufacturers Association and was honored by selection into the Mississippi Forestry Hall of Fame in Jackson. He was also a Rotarian and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Miller Poynter of Memphis; a daughter, Margaret Poynter McPherson of Germantown, Tenn.; a son, Hayden Clarence Poynter Jr. of Atlanta; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be today from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
