The Meridian Community College tennis team's struggles continued Monday, as they suffered a 13-2 defeated at the hands of the Hinds Community College Eagles.
On the men's side MCC's' top seed Stewart Everett bested Hinds' top netter Chris Paciotti, by virtue of a tough first set tiebreaker before finishing off the victory in the second set, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4.
Another bright spot for MCC came when sixth seed Kevin McDonald beat Bobby Reed 6-2, 6-0.
Beyond that, however, it was all Hinds, as they edged out the men's 2-5 netters to set the tone for the doubles slate.
Alfonso Preziozo defeated Albert Smith, 6-3, 6-1; Jason Gill def. Bard Curto, 6-1, 6-1; Josh Isles rallied to beat Brad Dearman, 3-6, 6-0, (10-5); Bart Mayfield def. Dustin Davidson, 6-3, 6-2.
The doubles matches were all very competitive, but Paciotti and Gill slipped past Everett and Smith, 8-6.
Preziozo and Mayfield, def. Davidson and McDonald, 8-5; Isles and Rush def. Curto and Dearman, 8-3.
On the women's side, Jane Schwartz def. Kelly Trebisky, 6-1, 6-2; Paige Mellow def. Dana Vance in a close one, 6-4, 3-6, (10-7); Melissa Rimes def. Jill Hathorn, 6-0, 6-0; Laura Winkler def. Meredith Vance, 6-4, 6-0; Ashley Manuel def. Anna Bailey, 6-2, 6-0; Marie Singleton def. Lauren Gavin, 6-7, 6-0, (10-7).
In women's doubles, Schwartz and Mellow def. Trebisky and Hathorn in a marathon, 10-8; Manuel and Winkler def. Vance and Vance, 8-6 and Singleton and Rimes def. Bailey and Gavin, 8-2.
MCC will host the Itawamba Community College Indians Friday, April 6. The Indians' No.1 women's seed is ranked No. 5 in the nation.
Saturday will also be a big day for tennis at Northeast Park tennis center, as Hinds and Itawamba will play at 9 a.m., with MCC facing off against Hinds again at 1 p.m.
