QUITMAN The Quitman Board of Aldermen received a report on the activities and proceeds from the town's Centennial Weekend.
More than 6,000 people attended the weekend event, according to Centennial committee chairman Nick Kramer. The committee reported that $7,277 was raised with all proceeds going to the H.C. Watkins Memorial Hospital Restoration Foundation. A breakdown showed that $3,064 was made on the t-shirts, $1,711 on the train rides and about $2,200 from the flea market.
Following the report, the winners from the Centennial art contest were recognized. Winners and their divisions were as follows: Grades K-3: 1) Alex Underwood, 2) Jessie Volking, 3) Bethany Rivers; Grades 4-8: 1) Page Bonner, 2) Jess Waltman, 3) Alycia Yarbrough; Grades 9-12: 1) Clarice Trotter, 2) McElvin Shepherd, 3) Calvin Mosley; Adult: 1) Bobby Rawlings, 2) Erma Stafford, 3) Bea Reynolds.
Sonya Napp won the essay contest, with Tiffany Jones coming in second.
Following the awards ceremony, aldermen took the following actions:
Accepted a bid from the Quitman Girls Softball Association to run the concession stand for the summer. The actual bid was $25, but all proceeds will go back into the program and improvements at the park;
Approved hiring Billy Lewis Jr. as an officer with the Quitman Police Department;
Approved a $585 tax refund to W.C. Boone;
Approved a motion for Police Chief Jimmy Ivy to attend a seminar in June;
Met with Mike Williams to discuss the city's insurance renewal rates;
Approved the minutes of the March 6 meeting, the overtime docket which totaled $1,264 and statements and invoices totaling $80,846.
