Sensei Jesse Paul Barnett Jr. of Skotokan Karate-do in Meridian was inducted into the U. S. Martial Artist Association Hall of Fame as Most Dedicated Martial Artist of the Year in Frederick, Md.
The acceptance of Barnett is in recognition of exemplary service, both to the community and to the profession.
Navy Seaman Prentiss T. Colter is currently on a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, home ported in Norfolk, Va.
While on deployment, crewmembers are participating in damage control olympics, a competition designed to train the crew to properly handle a crisis at sea. The events include: a fire-fighting gear race, a hose-manning competition, a chemical protective overgarment suit dressout and desmoking a compartment through the use of a smoke generator.
Colter is a 1998 graduate of Louisville High School. He is the son of Ruthie L. Colter and Prentiss T. Colter, both of Louisville.
Navy Airman Benny R. McCarty recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Western Pacific Ocean and Arabian Gulf while assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 25, embarked aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, home ported in Bremerton, Wash.
During the deployment, McCarty's squadron was on station in the Arabian Gulf supporting U.N. sanctions in the no-fly zone over southern Iraq and participating in maritime interception operations.
McCarty's squadron, home based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, Calif., flies the F/A-18C Hornet, a twin-engine supersonic strike fighter.
He is a 1998 graduate of Wayne County High School of Waynesboro. He is the son of Linda J. and William J. McCarty of Waynesboro.
DECATUR For over 10 years, members of Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) at East Central Community College have raised funds for area fire departments as one of their community projects.
The Marydale Fire Department of Leake was named the 2001 recipient of the club's generosity. ECCC President Phil A. Sutphin presented a check for $1,400 to Marydale Fire Chief Dale Johnson.
The Public Employees' Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS) will host a seminar in Meridian for retirees April 16. All persons receiving retirement benefits from PERS, their spouses and others interested in retirement issues are invited to attend.
The seminar will be held at the Multi-Purpose Room Mississippi State University-Meridian campus.
