During his 94 years of life, Lewis Clarke "Babe" Pearce touched the soul of this community. He owned and operated the Royal Crown Bottling Company, worked to improve public education as president of the Meridian School Board, headed up the Jaycees and actively participated in the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club and Meridian Housing Authority.
Mr. Pearce died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, and was laid to rest in Magnolia Cemetery on Friday, March 30.
Mr. Pearce was an outstanding athlete and played for the University of Alabama in two Rose Bowls before his graduation in 1929. He was devoted to Bama, just as he was devoted to his town, Meridian.
His family will miss his presence and this community will miss the leadership he offered on so many levels.
