Nijel Young went the distance for Noxapater, striking out seven and allowing only three hits, to pick up the shutout win over Union Monday.
Noxapater jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first inning and another in the second.
Union reliever Justin Darby came on in the second inning and struck out eight Noxapater batters in 51/3 innings, but Young's offense had already given him all the runs he would need.
Noxapater added runs in the fifth and seventh for the final margin.
Union starter B.J. Norton took the loss.
Corery Moore led Noxapater at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance including a home run. Sed Eichelberger added a double.
Union hosts Thomastown in a double header today.
Newton County 12, Carthage 9: The Cougars tried to put the game away early, outscoring Carthage 11-1 through the first three innings. But Carthage used a late rally to get back in the game.
After the third inning, Newton County's only other score came in the sixth. Meanwhile, Carthage scored two runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth to pull within three runs of the Cougars heading into the final frame.
The Carthage rally was cut short in the seventh though as the Cougars held on for the win.
Adam Bount picked up the win on the mound for the Cougars to improve his record to 3-2. Bount also led the Newton County offensive attack with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate including a home run.
Casey Bridges also went 2-for-3 with a home run for the Cougars. Matt Boggan and David McConnell each went 2-for-4.
Newton County will play host to Kemper County at 4 p.m. today.
Central Academy 21, Immanuel Christian 9, Game 1: The Central bats came alive for 13 hits as the Vikings mowed down Immanuel Monday in the first game of a double-header.
Tyler Huerkamp picked up the win to improve to 3-3 on the year.
Drew Powell had two singles and two doubles to lead the Viking offensive attack, Chris Rushing had a single and a double and Cameron Triplett had two singles.
Central Academy 13, Immanuel 8: In the nightcap, Central scored 13 runs on 10 hits to claim the victory.
John Cash improved to 3-1 with the win for Central.
Powell was once again Central's leading batter with two doubles.
Late Softball
Heidelberg Academy 11, Sylva-Bay Academy 6: The Lady Rebels scored seven times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for this District 3-A win over cross-county rival Sylva-Bay.
Leslie Higdon had four hits, one a triple, and two RBIs to lead Heidelberg Academy, while Danielle Martin had two singles, a triple and one RBI. Margaret Fleming and Emily Thornton both singled, doubled and drove home two runs, and Courtney Harrington also had two hits for the Lady Rebels.
Sylva-Bay, which actually led 6-0 after three innings, got a single and double from Mitzi Bayless and doubles from Ingrid Norvell and Mandy Parker.
Heidelberg Academy 14, Presbyterian Christian 3: The Lady Rebels scored five times each in the first and second innings and coasted to an easy win over the Lady Bobcats.
Higdon hit for the cycle with a homer, triple, double, single and four RBIs and winning pitcher Suzanne Lightsey had two triples and a single.
Martin had three hits and three RBIs, Shana Thornton homered, singled and drove in two runs, Falon Deas had two hits and Ramey McCarra homered and drove home two runs.
Christy Selman had two hits and Courtney Easterly a double for the Lady Bobcats.
