DECATUR A Hickory man accused of hitting a 14-year-old girl in the head with an ax was found guilty Tuesday of aggravated assault.
Cory Foreman, 35, will be sentenced by Circuit Judge Marcus Gordon today.
District Attorney Ken Turner said the trial lasted all day Monday.
He said Foreman was indicted late last year by a Newton County grand jury in connection with the Oct. 30 assault on the young girl. The victim was a friend of Foreman's child and was at the Foreman home when she was struck. Hickory police officials presented the case.
Turner said the prosecution's expert witness was Dr. Mark Webb, a psychiatrist who practices in Ridgeland. The defense called Dr. Rodrigo Galvez, a Jackson psychiatrist who contradicted Webb's testimony.
Newton County sheriff's officials said Foreman is being held in the Newton County jail pending sentencing.
Hickory officials said the child, whose name was not released because she is a juvenile, is doing fine.
