Two Newton County High School students escaped injury after the car in which they were riding left the roadway late Friday night.
The girls, members of the softball team, had participated in a game at the school earlier in the evening.
Newton County Chief Deputy Billy Truhitt said the accident occurred about 11 p.m. at the intersection of Lebanon Church and Little Rock Hickory roads.
Truhitt said Shelly Ferguson was transported to University Medical Center in Jackson after her injuries appeared to be serious. Truhitt said the girl was reportedly found to have no serious injuries after examination.
Her friend, Jennifer Smith, sustained no injuries in the accident, he said.
