Local teacher named alternate teacher of the year

JACKSON Liz Michael, a ninth-grade teacher at Kate Griffin Junior High School, was named "Alternate Teacher of the Year" Thursday by the Mississippi Department of Education.
The annual "Teacher of the Year" reception was held at the Majesty of Spain exhibition.
The Mississippi Teacher of the Year and alternate were chosen out of five statewide finalists.
Throughout Michael's teaching career, she has conducted workshops, training sessions, and served in many leadership roles. She received National Board Certification last year.
Michael has 21 years of experience and has taught at Kate Griffin since she first began teaching.
She will receive a $1,000 personal award and a $500 donation to her school from Entergy, as well as a $900 award from the Thomas Welch Agency of the College Fund Life Division.
The North Bolivar School District's Renee Moore was named Mississippi's 2001 Teacher of the Year.
The other finalists included: Cheryl D. Scales of Tupelo High School, Wendy Hope Aube' of Mt. Olive Attendance Center, and Trisha A. Havard of George County Middle School.
The finalists will receive a $1,000 personal award and a $500 donation to their schools from Entergy, as well as a $700 award from the Thomas Welch Agency of the College Fund Life Division.
Each school district is asked to submit a Teacher of the Year nominee. Applications are evaluated by an independent committee and regional finalists are then interviewed for the title of Teacher of the Year and alternate.
