United Way changes name, expands region

For years, many of the agencies of the United Way of Lauderdale County have gone beyond the borders to provide human services to those needing them.
To better reflect this, the board of directors decided to rename the fund-raising organization as the United Way of East Mississippi, effective immediately.
Louis Sutton Jr., the president of the United Way, said the organization plans to further extend services and funding to meet the needs of East Mississippi and West Alabama. It also plans to expand its annual campaign to Kemper and Clarke counties.
The names of titles have also changed: 1) The executive director, Sutton, is now the president and chief professional officer; and, 2) The volunteer president, Donnie Smith, is now the chairman of the board.
The United Way partially funds 18 human service agencies, including the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the American Red Cross, the Wesley House, the Boys and Girls Club, the Mental Health Association, the Domestic Abuse Shelter, the Salvation Army and others.
The annual campaign starts in September and runs through November.
