Finding a place to house stray animals in Lauderdale County is no longer just a good idea.
The Lauderdale County Humane Society is getting ready to open its operation in a county building it is renting, located on Lover's Lane.
Organizer Cheryl Walton said County Engineer Neal Carson and other county officials are helping the volunteers.
Walton said she may have an electrician lined up to do the wiring. District 5 Supervisor Ray Boswell said he will donate a refrigerator and she already had a freezer, a bathroom sink, tub and toilet donated. Walton has also been given a commercial, three-compartment stainless steel sink.
Walton said. "I don't know how much it's going to cost yet. I have to fax them a materials list. I'm also getting bids from Ace Metal Buildings.
She said Humane Society volunteers have cleaned the grounds. Walton said county crews delivered a green box, graded the road leading to the site, and are planning to bushhog the site so it will be easier for the volunteers to maintain.
Labor and materials aside, Walton said what isn't coming in is money.
There has been some help. The Bonita Lakes Saddle Club plans to donate proceeds from its annual ride next month, she said. Also, an Easter event at the mall brought in some money. And, the Humane Society netted $331 and some new members during Community Day at the mall last month.
