GALLMAN n It wasn't easy, but the Lamar School boys finished second in the Academy 3-AAA track meet at Copiah Academy Saturday.
At the end of the field events, Lamar had only 11 points, while Copiah had 64, Manchester had 52, and Central Hinds had 24.
Lamar's few points in the field events came from a first-place finish by William Anderson in the pole vault, a second-place finish by Johnny Swancey in the shot put, and a fifth-place finish by Quinton Brown in the long jump.
The Raiders cranked up the points in the running events as they eventually came in second.
Sam Eakes took third place in both the 110 meter high hurdles and 300 meter low hurdles.
Joe Bryant was third in the 100 meter run and second in the 200 meters.
Brown was third in the 400 meters.
Lamar got double points in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter runs to climb the point tally board.
Lathan Farley won the 800 meters with Dave Hicks taking third.
J. Grantham won the 1600 meters with Farley taking second place.
In the 3200 meters, Grantham was again the winner with John Blubaugh finishing third.
The Lamar 3200 meter relay team (Grantham, Hicks, Blubaugh, Farley) took first place, while the 400 (Bryant, James Powell, Brown, Anderson) and 800 meter relay squads (Bryant, Powell, Brown, Anderson) both placed third.
The 1600 meter relay team (Grantham, Blubaugh, Powell, Brown) took second place.
Copiah took first place with 176 points, while Lamar was second with 124. Manchester was third with 106. Central Hinds completed the field with 54 points.
The top four finishers in each event qualify for the Academy AAA South State meet at Copiah next Saturday.
The Lady Raiders also competed in the district meet.
Lisa Swartzfager won the 3200 meters.
Jamie Henderson was third in the 300 meter low hurdles and fifth in the 110 high hurdles.
Libby Huff was first in the 1600 meters.
Bradleigh Huitt was fifth in the 200 meters and fifth in the 400 meters.
Emily Farley placed third in the 200 meters.
