By Staff
April 22, 2001
SCOOBA East Mississippi Community College's annual Pine Grove Festival continues this week, providing students, instructors and the public an opportunity to celebrate the fine arts with music, art exhibits, literature, theatre and guest performers.
A student art exhibit and sale begins Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Stennis Hall foyer.
On Thursday at 7 p.m., guest speaker Elizabeth Sarcone will present "Myths and Fairy Tales: Not Just for Children" in the Stennis Auditorium. Sarcone will present two fairy tales "The Handless Maiden" and "Conn-Eda" and will explain how they provide psychological solutions to problems people face.
Sarcone, who is a professor of English at Delta State University, has a doctorate degree in English from Vanderbilt University, a bachelor of science and a master of art degree from Mississippi University for Women, and a master of education degree in community counseling from Delta State University. This year, she received the Humanities Educator Award from the Mississippi Humanities Council for various programs, including several that involve telling and exploring fairy tales and myths.
Next fall, Sarcone will teach a course titled "Reading Fiction for a Change: Literature as Spiritual Discipline."
The festival will conclude on May 1 with a performance by the EMCC choral students at 7 p.m. in Stennis Auditorium.
For more information, call 662-476-8442.
The Pine Grove Festival is financially assisted by the National Endowment for the Humanities through the Mississippi Humanities Council.
