Three e-mail messages arrived within minutes of each other at The Meridian Star on Wednesday, the day after the flag vote was in. The writers had visited us online, seen our headlines and felt compelled to respond.
From the rurals of Ohio came this:
The second came from Atlanta, where a former Meridian resident had this to say:
The third was from a Florida resident. It said:
The flag issue will not go away and people outside of the state will continue to express opinions. But after voters spoke so loudly for the 1894 flag, we Mississippians have a wonderful opportunity to move on with the rest of our lives.
One is reminded of a stirring account of life in our state written by a young Mississippian and published in the Mississippi Official and Statistical Register, 1996-2000.
Its poignant passages offer a fundamental and somehow reassuring assessment of who we are and from where we come. Follow along as we imagine ourselves on a journey to rediscover what's important about Mississippi.
This home remains ours and we can make of it what we will.
