Some things that are not taken care of when the opportunity arises can come back and add up in a big way. Just ask the Clarkdale Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs hosted Lumberton in the second round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association's Class 2A state baseball playoffs Thursday night and found themselves falling 5-2 in the first game of the best-of-three series.
Clarkdale jumped on the scoreboard first when Brandon Mabry reached base on an error, then later scored on Chris Moffett's double.
Lumberton answered in the second by adding their own run. Zach Rougals scored on a single by Dominique Lee to tie the game at 1-1.
Clarkdale took the lead in the third on a solo home run by Matt Minchew.
However, that's all the runs the Bulldogs got as Lumberton's Jonathan Ladres scored in the third inning and again in the seventh by nailing a solo home run. Josh Parks also scored for Lumberton.
Moffett (8-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs as they dropped to 25-7. He struck out 11 batters, walked one, and gave up six hits.
The Bulldogs had five hits in the contest.
Lumberton improved to 24-11 with the win.
Clarkdale will travel to Lumberton on Saturday for Game 2 of the series with the Bulldogs facing a must-win situation to continue their season.
Game time is set to begin at 1 p.m.
A third game, if needed, would be at Clarkdale on Monday.
