Lady Statesmen fall to UCA

CLEVELAND The Delta State University softball team (31-29, 15-4 GSC) dropped a doubleheader to Central Arkansas (20-28, 10-10 GSC) on Sunday.
In the opener, UCA broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning when Mindy Gabbert lhit a homerun to right field. The Bears added a second run when Amanda Carey scored from first base on a DSU error.
The Lady Statesmen responded by scoring a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth when Tara Beausoliel drove a double to deep centerfield, allowing Brenna Brooks to score from second.
Nicki Genre scattered six hits, striking out seven, and allowed one walk.
In the nightcap, the Lady Statesmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tiffany Phillips RBI single plated Meggan Lee from second base.
Central Arkansas tied the game when April St. Cyr's RBI double allowed Joanna Velasquez to score from first base. The Bears took the lead when Jenni Taylor's double plated St. Cyr.
The Lady Statesmen nearly tied the game when Casey Kuhl crushed a ball to deep right field in the bottom of the fourth inning with Kacy Smith on
second base. Right fielder Lanna Allen made a leaping catch to help the Bears escape the inning.
Duana Meseyton allowed eight hits with three strike outs. Joy Long and Casey Bourgoyne led the DSU attack, each going 2-for-3. Phillips went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
