SCOOBA Work at the site of a future Tennessee Valley Authority plant could begin in two to three weeks.
The site is on Cobb Road, about a mile north of Highway 16. Kemper County crews began widening and straightening the road last month.
A TVA official managing contractors could be moving to the area in two to three weeks, Carter said.
Spokesman Gil Francis said TVA officials are working on a grading plan for the site.
The proposed $180 million natural gas-fired turbine generating plant has brought other improvements the plant must have to meet its needs. A $2 million water line project was scheduled to begin Tuesday in DeKalb.
Terrell Temple, engineer for Kemper County and DeKalb, said a new water well is scheduled for construction this summer and a new water treatment plant early next year. DeKalb is expected to contribute $80,000 for the improvements; the rest will be funded by TVA and grants.
Scheduled to be in operation by the summer of 2002, the power plant will use four combustion turbines to generate 340 megawatts to help meet the demand for electricity during peak periods.
