May 5, 2001
Russell Moore Dennis, a "hot type" print craftsman, worked 43 years in the composing room of The Meridian Star.
Retired composing room foreman Jimmy Gossett said Dennis often told the story of how former Meridian Star owner, James H. Skewes, hired him during the Depression.
Dennis, 88, died Thursday at Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center. A graveside service is planned for 3 p.m. today at Magnolia Cemetery.
Max Hodgins worked with Dennis for more than 30 years.
Dennis' grandson, Joey Poe, is now the pressroom foreman at The Star.
While growing up, Poe said he never thought about working at the same place his grandfather did.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
Steve Swogetinsky is regional editor of The Meridian Star. Call him at 693-1551, ext. 3217, or e-mail him at sswogetinsky@themeridianstar.com.
