Abbey Shurlds of Slidell, La., was named first place winner in the Louisiana State PTA Reflections Program, Primary Music division. She was honored at the Louisiana State PTA Convention in Hammond, La., on April 21, at the Children's Awards Banquet.
For her entry, she composed an original tune with lyrics entitled, "Wouldn't it be Strange if I Saw a Mummy?"
She is a first grader at Cypress Cove Elementary School. Abbey is the daughter of Henry and Ginny Shurlds of Slidell and the granddaughter of Bob and Barbara Walker of Meridian and Maury and Mildred Shurlds of Maben.
Southeast Middle School student, Bailey Price, 13, of Meridian, has been named a United States National Award winner in Science.
Price was nominated for the award by science teacher Robbie Workman. Criteria for the award includes the student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation, citizenship, attitude, dependability and a recommendation by a teacher or director.
Price is the daughter of Tommy and DeNay Price of Meridian and the granddaughter of Donald and Doris Lewis and Algene and P.I. Price all of Meridian.
Meridian Community College freshman Elizabeth Anderson is the recipient of a $400 Sara and Sam Niemetz Memorial Math Scholarship.
The scholarships are funded through an endowment established by the late Sara Niemetz and funded through the MCC Foundation.
Anderson is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School. She is a member of MCC's Chapter of the Future Teachers Association and she serves as secretary of the Wesley Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa.
Anderson plans to complete her degree in secondary education at Mississippi State University.
Gabe Houston of Philadelphia is the WTOK-TV Scholar at Meridian Community College.
Funded by the local television station through The MCC Foundation, the annual scholarship provides $1,000 for the recipient.
Houston is a graduate of Neshoba Central High School. He is a full-time student in the Broadcast Communications Program and he is active in the Student Association of Broadcasters.
Meridian Community College freshman Keyes Kennard, 19, of Starkville, has been named a William and Dorothy Lerner Scholar for the spring semester.
Kennard is pursuing a degree in electronics. He is active in his church and in the OKTOC Community Club.
A freshman in Meridian Community College's Associate Degree Nursing Program has been named as the Doris and Cecil Seale Memorial Scholarship recipient for the spring semester. A special committee selected Jenna Lynn Shults, 21, of Collinsville.
The $250 scholarship is funded annually by Daisy Moore and Gary and Kathy Moore, all of Fairhope, Ala., through the MCC Foundation.
Shults is a member of the campus and state Organization of Student Nurses.
East Central Community College sophomores, Sarah Johnson, of Hickory and Ashley Jones of Forest have been named to the 2001 Phi Theta Kappa All-Mississippi Academic Team, which recognizes scholarly achievements and leadership accomplishments of community and junior college students.
Johnson, a liberal arts major with a 3.8 grade point average, was named to the second team.
Jones, a chemical engineering major with a 4.0 GPA, was selected for the first team. Both students were recognized by the Mississippi Legislature at the State Capitol during a luncheon. Gov. Ronnie Musgrove was the featured speaker.
