West, Northeast seeking golf titles

LAUREL Day One of the MHSAA Class 3A and 4A State Golf Tournaments didn't go exactly the way a couple of area teams planned.
In a day cut short at Dixie Country Club by lightning and rain, West Lauderdale and Northeast Lauderdale found themselves in second and third place in their respective classifications.
In 3A action, the Knights trail leader Senatobia by a composite score of 308-322.
In the 4A division, Scooter Holloway's Northeast Lauderdale Trojans are currently 17 shots behind leader Petal, 301-318.
Four teams were unable to finish the round due to lightning and rain.
The final round of the state tournament will be completed today, weather permitting.
Individual first round scores for West were: Ross McWilliams, 78; Matt Smith, 79; Shane Parker, 79; Josh Boyette, 86 and Richard Ferguson with an 87.
Individual scores for Northeast were: Clinton Hales, 76; A.J. Long, 76, John Barr, 82; Brian Stringer, 84 and Matt Downing with an 86.
The Knights will tee off today at 11:30 a.m. and the Trojans will hit the links at 10 a.m.
Forest sits in fifth place with a tally of 337. The Bearcat scorers were: Jim Dilley 77; Spencer Rushing 81; Jess Dilley 88, Zach Rushing 91 and John Burgin with a 95.
Class 5A: With a composite score of 647, Meridian High finished eighth out of 16 teams at the state championship match held at Cherokee Valley Golf Club in Olive Branch.
Wayne County finished 11 with a score of 674.
Individual scores for the Wildcats were: Tommy Robinson 157; David Bailey 159; Bradley Futch 168; Andrew Thomas 170 and Wesley Morgan with a 177.
War Eagle finishers were: Caleb Davis 154; Will Cran 166; Josh Thornton 172; Thomas King 182 and Noah Gandy at 224.
