Meridian police believe 40-year-old Gregory Sykes, who allegedly attacked a Meridian woman with a hatchet on Mother's Day, may have fled to the Chicago area.
An arrest warrant for aggravated assault has been issued for Sykes.
The woman was transported to a local hospital following the Sunday morning attack. She underwent surgery for wounds sustained to her head and back, said Lt. Wade Johnson.
Hoadley said the victim was reportedly in stable condition Monday and is expected to survive.
Police declined Monday morning to report what type of weapon was used in the attack, saying she was "cut" with a sharp object. Hoadley confirmed later in the day that the weapon involved was a hatchet.
Meridian police began their search Sykes in and around the East End neighborhood where the attack occurred. The arrest warrant was issued Sunday.
Sykes is a black man, 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighing about 170 pounds.
Johnson said Sykes and the victim are not married. While he is not sure of the relationship between them, police are under obligation to file charges according to the state's domestic violence statutes, he said.
Hoadley said while Sykes is wanted in connection with a violent crime, is is not believed to be dangerous to the public. Residents with information can call CrimeStoppers at 485-1860.
