Lamar girls win South State championship

The Lamar boys and girls tennis teams traveled to McComb Wednesday for the South State 3AAA Tournament and the girls brought home the championship trophy.
The Lady Raiders' No. 1 girls doubles team of Jennifer Russell and Anne Archer annihilated the team of Thornton and Williams from Silliman Institute 6-3, 6-0 and clinched the championship by defeating Clayton and Donahoe 6-3, 6-0.
Lamar's Molly Rutherford and Ann Claire Marascalco playing at No. 2 girls doubles breezed past Ayers and Bryant of Adams County Christian School 6-3, 6-0 before taking a 6-2, 6-3 win over Copiah Academy's team of Williams and Price.
In No. 2 girls singles, Lamar's Kate Archer defeated Lauren Kent of Silliman Institute 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Manchester's Rachel Parker 6-2, 6-2.
In boys action, Lamar's No. 2 doubles team of Pat Phillippi and J Grantham rolled to an easy victory over Freeman and Freeman of Adams County Christian 6-3, 6-2 and captured the title by defeating Copiah Academy's team of Walker and Davis 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Also, the boys No. 1 doubles team of Stanton Lauderdale and Lane Rush qualified for the state tournament in Jackson by defeating Stubbs and Hegwood of Silliman 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, but fell to the Copiah team of Ash and Isles in the finals 6-4, 6-3.
The eighth grade mixed doubles team of Danny Russell and Kristina Makey lost in a grueling match 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
The team now advances to the Class 3AAA Tournament at Parham Bridges in Jackson May 9.
