Meridian golfer named Academic All-American
Robert Dreyfus, a senior from Meridian, was selected to the Golf Coaches Association of America's Academic All-American team for 2001.
Dreyfus played in six tournaments for Ole Miss this year before suffering a season-ending wrist injury.
The Rebels are competing in the NCAA Championships at Durham, N.C.
MCC inks NW Rankin golfer
Josh Martin of Northwest Rankin has signed a national letter-of-intent to play golf at Meridian Community College, MCC coach Lou Hart announced.
Martin was medalist seven times as a junior with a stroke average of 74.4. He placed second in the Madison Central Big Blue Invitational this year.
Collier inks with Tougaloo
Chandra Collier, a 6-foot forward on Meridian High School's Class 5A state runner-up girls' basketball team, has signed with Tougaloo College in Jackson.
Also inking with Tougaloo are 5-foot-10 guard/forward Shako Freeman of Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Ala.; 6-foot-1 forward Samantha Harrison from Terry; 6-foot forward LaShandra Smith from Starkville; 6-foot forward Shakita Newson from East Marion, and 5-foot-5 guard Christy Randall from Mary Holmes College.
MCC baseball inks three
Recent baseball signees with Meridian Community College include pitcher Chris Moffett of Clarkdale. The Bulldogs, 25-8, made the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs this spring before losing to Lumberton.
Also inking with the Eagles are pitcher Damien Givens of McComb and infielder Brent Towne of Class 5A state champion Warren Central, 36-3.
Union to host two golf tourneys
Union Golf Club will play host to a pair of tournaments in the near future.
A two-man select tournament is slated for June 9-10. Entry fee is $25 per person, mulligan included.
On June 12, there will be a 27-hole seniors tournament for persons 55 and older. Entry fee is $25 per person.
