Lauderdale County supervisors have voted to amend the county's solid waste plan to allow medical waste. The decision was made to support a medical waste disposal facility expected to be built in Meridian.
Supervisors held a public hearing at a regular meeting earlier this week. Lauderdale County Engineer Neal Carson said no one showed up for the hearing except Jim Brumfield, the Meridian businessman who wants to build the facility and offer the services.
Brumfield owns Southern Waste Disposal, a local solid waste hauling company, and operates two rubbish landfills. He wants to build a disposal facility on Braxton Avenue.
Pine Ridge Landfill, operated by Waste Management and located on Murphy Road inside Meridian city limits, is used by Meridian, Lauderdale County and other surrounding cities, towns and counties.
Carson said supervisors voted to amend the county's solid waste master plan but must next issue a formal resolution. They will then notify the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality in Jackson, and Brumfield can apply for a DEQ permit to build the facility, Carson said.
Brumfield is expected to begin building the facility 30-60 days after he gets the permit.
